Compare mailing equipment from one manufacturer to those from all the other companies and vice-versa.

First you need to have an idea of your mail volume and the type of the postage machine you need. Some questions to consider:
• Are you mailing 5-10 standard business envelopes a day or are you mailing several hundred pieces at a time?
• What is the most a mail piece will weigh?
• Do you mail a lot of pieces with varying weights?
• Do you have odd shaped or extremely thick mail pieces?
Answers to these questions can help you become less dependent on what one of the postage meter companies sales people will recommend.

The secret here is not just compare, but make sure that each of the sales reps who call on you know you are comparing their postage system to all the other competitors and vice-versa. Do it just like a public agency usually does. Ask for their best quotation by a certain date and tell them when you will make a decision. Don’t reveal one company’s quotes to another – unless you want a particular machine and want to use the other company’s price as leverage to get the system you want at a lower price. Sounds simple, but I estimate less than one-third of buyers do this. It can save you 60%!
